Prince Albert’s papers relating to Cambridge University
This collection, predominantly consisting of correspondence, memoranda and reports, relates mainly to the University of Cambridge, of which Prince Albert (1819-61) was Chancellor.
Filed together in one volume are the papers relating to the contentious contested election against the Earl of Powis for the role in February 1847. Also included are arrangements for Prince Albert’s inauguration including the commissioning of an ode by William Wordsworth.
The remaining five volumes contain the Prince's papers relating to the appointment of the Royal Commission to inquire into the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge in 1850 and the subsequent reforms to governance, funding and the curriculum as well as administrative matters relating to appointments and awards.
