Letter from Lord John Russell to Prince Albert
9 Apr 1848Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (4 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/MAIN/C/56/14
Letter Lord John Russell to Prince Albert reporting that the Cabinet have had the assistance of the Duke of Wellington with their plans for the following day. Colonel Rowan has advised that they allow the procession [of Chartists] to come only as far as 'the bridge', as an attempt to avoid a fight. He states that if the Chartists 'draw their swords' the military will be called out to deal with the situation however he hopes this can be avoided as any loss of life would cause further resentment.
