HENRY PHILPOTT (1807-92)

Letter from Dr Philpott to Major General Grey

24 Oct 1860

Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (4 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/MAIN/F/35/108

Dr Philpott refers to the appointment of a professor of Hindustani at the University of Cambridge and suggests a Major Stephen. He discusses the establishment of a Hulsian professorship of divinity instead of the old office of Christian Advocate, as a better direction of Mr Hulse's endowment. Dr Philpott also mentions a Grace to be proposed to appoint syndics to defend the actions brought against some university officers who sought to clear the streets of 'women of immodest character'.
