'San Tomas de Aquinas'

Photograph of the painting 'The Apotheosis of Saint Thomas Aquinas' by the Spanish painter Zurbaran. In the painting, Saint Thomas stands, holding an open book and looking upwards to the heavens. He is flanked by four members of the church, all of whom hold books. Further down the painting, on the left kneels the founder of the Colegio de Santo Tomás de Aquino in Seville. On the right kneels Emperor Charles V. Both figures look upwards towards Aquinas.

'The Apotheosis of Saint Thomas Aquinas' was painted by Francisco de Zurbaran (1598-1664) and was completed in 1631. The painting represents the bridging between the two facets of faith and reason with Saint Thomas presiding in the centre. It was commissioned by the Colegio de Santo Tomás de Aquino in Seville and features the College's founder Fray Diego Deza at the bottom left. The painting currently hangs in the Museum of Fine Art in Seville.
