CHARLES CLIFFORD (1819-62)

'La Perla'

c. 1854

Albumen print | 29.6 x 22.3 cm (image) | RCIN 2700181

Photograph of the painting 'La Perla' by Rafael. The painting shows a group comprising the Virgin and Saint Anne with the infant Jesus and infant Saint John the Baptist. On the Virgin's lap is seated the Christ child who, with his left leg balanced on his crib, looks up towards his mother. Saint John the Baptist walks towards the group holding an armful of fruit. The painting is set in a nightscape with Saint Joseph partially obscured amongst ruins in the left of the background. Romanesque ruins occupy the right background.

The painting was completed in 1520 by the Italian artist Rafael Sanzio da Urbino and may have been commissioned by the Bishop of Bayeux. It currently hangs in the Museo del Prado in Madrid (inv. no. 301).
