Civiale's systematic documentation of the Alpine landscape has been described as one of the earliest applications of photography to the study of geology. The end result of his decade-long project was the publication of 'Les Alpes au point de vue de la géographie physique et de la géologie' in 1882 (RCIN 1075955).
