'Portion of Votive Picture. Enamel by Léonard Limosin'; The Entombment
c. 1855Albumen print? | RCIN 2864507
Photograph of a Limoges enamel medallion created in 1553 by Léonard Limosin (c.1506-1577), part of his Crucifixion retable for Saint-Chapelle, Paris (see RCIN 2864504). As with the rest of the retable, this fragment has been in the collection of the Louvre since 1816 (MR 208 1). It shows the Virgin placing the Christ's body to the tomb. St John the Evangelist is probably the figure on the right holding Christ's ankles. A group of male and female figures can be seen in the background.
