CHARLES THURSTON THOMPSON (1816-68)

'Portion of Votive Picture. Enamel by Léonard Limosin'; Procession to Calvary

c. 1855

Albumen print? | RCIN 2864508

Photograph of a Limoges enamel medallion created in 1553 by Léonard Limosin (c.1506-1577), part of his Crucifixion retable for Saint-Chapelle, Paris (see RCIN 2864504). As with the rest of the retable, this fragment has been in the collection of the Louvre since 1816 (MR 208 1). Christ is visible in the centre of the scene, buckled to his knees under the weight of the cross as he walks to the left. Veronica kneels beside him to the right raising her veil to wipe his face. A young man attempts the lift the cross from behind. The Virgin, St John and other male and female figures are also depicted. A city's defence wall can be seen in the background.
