'Mme Elisabeth séparée de la famille royale'
1857-58Albumen print? | RCIN 2160816
Photograph of a drawing by Paul Delaroche, created around 1854. Inspired by an episode from the French Revolution, the work depicts the transfer of Élisabeth (1764-1794), Louis XVI’s sister, from the Temple tower to the Conciergerie in 9 May 1794. She is shown at a doorway of the medieval fortress as she is being separated from Marie-Thérèse (1778-1851), her niece and daughter of the deposed King. Taken away by a guard on the right, she looks over her shoulder and extends her right arm towards Marie-Thérèse. Another guard is closing the door behind them, an action resisted by Marie-Thérèse who clings on to the door and colapses on her knees.
