AFTER HIPPOLYTE PAUL DELAROCHE (1797-1856)

'Marie Stuart (derniere communion)'

1857-58

Albumen print? | RCIN 2160817

Photograph of a drawing by Paul Delaroche, perhaps drafted as preparatory for a painting that was never executed. Inspired by the last communion of Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots (1542-87), the work depicts the deposed queen in full-length, kneeling on a cushion and facing to the left. She places her palms on the alter in front of her and rests her head on her knuckles. She wears a veil and a floor-length dress. Two male attendants can be seen kneeling behind her, their hands clasped in prayer.
