AFTER ARY SCHEFFER (1795-1858)

'L'Enfant charitable'

1860

Albumen print? | RCIN 2865035

Photograph of a work by Ary Scheffer, the prime version of which was created in 1840 and is now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Nantes (Inv. no. 1172). The half-length group portrait depicts a young boy extending his hands and placing them around the neck of a nun lying in bed. Her rosary beads and prayer book are placed on her thighs, which are covered by drapery. An angel can be seen to the left raising his left hand in blessing.

Scheffer (and his studio) continued throughout his life to produce new works of old compositions on demand. His paintings were also widely reproduced as etchings.
