'Le Christ au jardin des Oliviers'
1860Albumen print? | RCIN 2865034
Photograph of a work by Ary Scheffer, the prime version of which was created in 1836 and is now on display at the Notre-Dame de La Ferté-Milon in France. Inspired by the Gospel of Saint Luke (22: 40-46), the work depicts a half length portrait of the Christ kneeling, supported by an angel who stands behind him.
Scheffer (and his studio) continued throughout his life to produce new works of old compositions on demand. His paintings were also widely reproduced as etchings.
