'La veuve du soldat'
1860Albumen print? | RCIN 2865011
Photograph of a work by Ary Scheffer, the prime version of which was completed in 1822 and shown at the Paris salon of the same year. The image depicts a soldier's widow in full-length, facing to the left. She carries her baby on her back and gazes upwards. Her older son stands on a road beside her, holding his late father's sword and looking at his mother.
Scheffer (and his studio) continued throughout his life to produce new works of old compositions on demand. His paintings were also widely reproduced as etchings.
