AFTER HIPPOLYTE PAUL DELAROCHE (1797-1856)

'Jeanne d'Arc'

1857-58

Albumen prints? | RCIN 2160750

Photograph of a painting by Paul Delaroche, created in 1824 and now in the collection of the Musèe des beaux-arts de Rouen (Inv. no. 982.6.1). The image depicts a handcuffed Joan of Arc (1412-1431) reclining on the bed of her prison cell. Her hands are clasped in prayer as she is being interrogated by Henry Beaufort, Cardinal of Winchester (1375-1447). Beaufort is seated in an armchair beside Joan on the left. He looks intensely at her and points his left hand downwards as a threat of eternal damnation. A male figure stands in the background capturing the live testimony with a reed pen and notebook.
