? HILLS & SAUNDERS (1852 TO DATE)

The Queen's Sitting Room, Windsor Castle

c. 1862

RCIN 2084294

Glass plate negative of a corner of the Queen's Sitting Room, Windsor Castle. The photograph was possibly taken shorlty after Prince Albert's death and depicts the room as arranged by Queen Victoria. An engraved print from the original painting of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales by FX Winterhalter stands on an easel. Behind is a cabinet with painted panels of flowers; there are three writing tables in a row, on which there are many ornaments, books, clock, photographs, a small bust of Prince Albert and a statuette of a dog, and desk equipment. The chairs are covered in paisley-patter fabric.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. A print from this negative exists in the Collection, RCIN 2100599. For a hand-colour version see RCIN 925340.
