After holding a competition for the design of the Exhibition building the Building Committee went on to reject the 200 applications they received. Instead they designed their own building under the lead of the famous engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. This letter from Colonel Reid to Colonel Grey reports that the plans have been signed off and that they are currently discussing the possibility of building a domed roof.
