PARMIGIANINO (PARMA 1503-CASALMAGGIORE 1540)

St Peter and St John healing a lame man at the gate of the Temple

c.1523-1530

Etching | 27.8 x 41.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853106

A print reproducing a composition related to Raphael's cartoon of 'The Healing of the Lame Man', designed for one of the Sistine Chapel tapestries in c.1515-16 (see RCIN 912946). For a state with tone blocks see RCIN 853105.

The composition is generally described as a free adaptation of Raphael's original design. It has been suggested that the print may record, in reverse, a lost drawing by the master for the final composition. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
