GIOVANNI BATTISTA FRANCO (C. 1510-1561)

St Peter and St John healing a lame man at the gate of the Temple

c.1530-51

Engraving | 25.7 x 41.7 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853107

A print reproducing a composition based on Raphael's cartoon of The Healing of the Lame Man, designed for one of the Sistine Chapel tapestries in c.1515-16 (see RCIN 912946).

It has been suggested that a (now lost) preparatory study by Raphael for the final composition may have served as model for Battista Franco’s engraving. A drawing now in the Louvre, Paris (inv. no.3988) has sometimes been described as a copy after such lost study by Raphael. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
