St Peter and St John healing a lame man at the gate of the Temple

c.1523-1530

Chiaroscuro woodcut from two blocks, with etching | RCIN 853105

A print reproducing a composition related to Raphael's cartoon of 'The Healing of the Lame Man', designed for one of the Sistine Chapel tapestries in c.1515-16 (see RCIN 912946). Lettered on column base at left: I.V.R.

The composition is generally described as a free adaptation of Raphael's original design. It has been suggested that the print may record, in reverse, a lost preparatory drawing by the master for the final composition. The attribution of the print is also a matter of dispute.
