AFTER A WORK ATTRIBUTED TO RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

Portrait of Pope Julius II

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 33.3 x 24.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852031

A photograph of a drawing now in the Devonshire Collection, Chatsworth House (inv. no.757). The drawing corresponds with the 'Portrait of Pope Julius II', a painting made by Raphael in c.1511 now in the National Gallery, London (inv. NG 27). The authorship of the drawings is still debated, with some scholars regarding it as a workshop copy (Dussler) and others accepting it as a Raphael autograph work (Joannides, Plazzotta). Another photograph of the drawing at RCIN 852032.
