AFTER A WORK ATTRIBUTED TO RAPHAEL (1483-1520)

Portrait of Pope Julius II

after 1860

Carbon print | 33.1 x 23.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852032

A photograph of a drawing now in the Devonshire Collection, Chatsworth House (inv. no.757). The drawing corresponds with the Portrait of Pope Julius II, a painting made by Raphael in c.1511 now in the National Gallery, London (inv. NG 27). The authorship of the drawings is still debated, with some scholars regarding it as a workshop copy (Dussler) and others accepting it as a Raphael autograph work (Joannides, Plazzotta). Another photograph of the drawing at RCIN 852031.
