Portrait of Pope Julius II

published 1789

Engraving | RCIN 852023

A print after one of the several existing copies of the ‘Portrait of Pope Julius II’, the original version of which was made by Raphael in c.1511 and is now in the National Gallery, London (inv. NG 27). Published in ‘Tableaux, statues, bas-reliefs et camées de la galerie de Florence et du Palais Pitti’, Paris 1789, vol.3. According to Ruland (1876), this print is after a painting housed in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence (inv.1912, no.79), which he regarded as the original by Raphael, following an opinion already expressed by Passavant (1860). That painting is now considered as a copy by Titian after Raphael’s original portrait now commonly identified with the painting hanging in the London National Gallery.
  • Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
