Portrait of Pope Julius II
c.1600-1700Engraving | RCIN 852024
An anonymous print reproducing the composition of the ‘Portrait of Pope Julius II’, a painting made by Raphael in c.1511 now in the National Gallery, London (inv. NG 27). Without letters, and with pen and brown ink decorative marks in the lower margin below image.
The composition is known through several painted and engraved copies.
Ruland (1876) followed Passavant’s opinion (1860) and regarded a painting in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence (inv.1912, no.79) as the original by Raphael. That painting is now unanimously accepted as a copy by Titian after Raphael’s original portrait now commonly identified with the painting hanging in the London National Gallery.
