AFTER FRANCESCO SALVIATI (FLORENCE 1510-ROME 1563)
Portrait of a Young Man (Self-portrait?)
c.1853-76Albumen print | 15.6 x 13.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852146
A photograph of a painting attributed to Francesco Salviati currently in the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples (inv. Q 142).
The painting was formerly reputed to be a portrait by Raphael of Antonio Tebaldeo (1463-1537). This view was dismissed by Passavant (1860), who first suggested an attribution to Salviati which has been generally accepted by all scholars since. The identity of the sitter is still disputed, with scholars suggesting that the painting may be a self-portrait.
