NICOLAS AUGUSTE LEISNIER (1787-1857)

Portrait of a Young Man (Marcantonio Raimondi?)

dated 1838

Engraving with etching | 48.5 x 37.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852147

A print after a painting previously in the collection of M. Parade de l'Estang at Aix. As stated by the lettering below image, the painting was formerly reputed to be a self-portrait by Raphael. Lettered with production details and stamped with the publisher's blind stamp (Lugt 4211).

Another state of this plate bears lettering describing the painting as a portrait by Raphael of Marcantonio Raimondi (see British Museum, inv.1869,0612.312), an interpretation which was accepted by Passavant (1860) but doubted by Ruland (1876).
