GUGLIELMO NAPOLITANO MORGHEN (ACTIVE C. 1780-1825)
Portrait of a Young Man (Self-portrait?)
c.1780-1825Engraving | 48.6 x 35.9 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852145
A print after a painting attributed to Francesco Salviati currently in the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples (inv. Q 142). State before all letters. The engraver's name is annotated in pencil at lower right.
The painting was formerly reputed to be a portrait by Raphael of Antonio Tebaldeo (1463-1537). This view was dismissed by Passavant (1860), who first suggested an attribution to Salviati which has been generally accepted by all scholars since. The identity of the sitter is still disputed, with scholars suggesting that the painting may be a self-portrait.
