A self-portrait of Raphael
dated 1809Etching | 16.4 x 11.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850018
An etching reproducing a painting by Raphael (c.1505) now in the Uffizi, Florence (inv. no. 1890). This print is signed and dated by the printmaker ("SvK 1809") and lettered with the title. According to Ruland (1876), this print was the frontispiece to Karl Förster's "Raphael. Kunst und Kuenstlerleben, in Gedichten von Karl Foerster. - Mit Kupfern nach Gemaelden von Rafael", 1827.
This painting has been identified as a self-portrait of Raphael, but there is much debate about its authorship. This is partially due to its state of preservation (see Bibliographic References for further discussion).
