THOMSON, JAMES (1789-1850)

A self-portrait of Raphael

c.1820-1850

Engraving and stipple | 27.7 x 19.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850017

An engraving reproducing a miniature which is a copy of a painting by Raphael (c.1505) now in the Uffizi, Florence (inv. no. 1890). This print is signed by the printmaker. Lettered below the image with the title, information about the miniature and publication details. Lettered at the bottom left corner: "Proof".

According to the lettering, the miniature was then in the possession of the Rev. Horace Cholmondeley, Kingston House, Dorchester and this print was published under the superintendence of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge.

This painting has been identified as a self-portrait of Raphael, but there is much debate about its authorship. This is partially due to its state of preservation (see Bibliographic References for further discussion).
