JOHANN CHRISTOPH DIETZSCH (1710 - 1768)

A self-portrait of Raphael

c.1730-1768

Etching | 12.8 x 9.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850019

An etching reproducing in reverse a painting by Raphael (c.1505) now in the Uffizi, Florence (inv. no. 1890). This print is signed by the printmaker ("J.C.D.") and lettered with the title.

This painting has been identified as a self-portrait of Raphael, but there is much debate about its authorship. This is partially due to its state of preservation (see Bibliographic References for further discussion).
