Portraits
A self-portrait of Raphael
c.1810-1830Etching | 16.6 x 13.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850023
An outline etching reproducing a painting by Raphael (c.1505) now in the Uffizi, Florence (inv. no. 1890). This print is signed by the printmaker with the attribution of the painting to Raphael. Lettered above the image: "III"; "15". This print is probably from a series of twenty etchings after paintings in Palazzo Pitti, Florence. The plates are made after intermediary drawings by Vincenzo Gozzini.
This painting has been identified as a self-portrait of Raphael, but there is much debate about its authorship. This is partially due to its state of preservation (see Bibliographic References for further discussion).
