GEORG MARTIN PREISSLER (1700-54)

A self-portrait of Raphael

published 1741

Engraving | 26.8 x 17.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850024

An engraving reproducing a painting by Raphael (c.1505) now in the Uffizi, Florence (inv. no. 1890). Lettered with the title and the names of the printmaker and the intermediate draughtsman. This print was published in 'Museum Florentinum', a series of prints reproducing works from the art collections in Florence. The set consists of twelve volumes (1731-1766).

This painting has been identified as a self-portrait of Raphael, but there is much debate about its authorship. This is partially due to its state of preservation (see Bibliographic References for further discussion).
