Photograph of a full length, double portrait of the gardener John Simpson and his wife seated on a bench in the middle of a garden path. The couple are posed facing the camera front on. A hedge, trees and plants surround the couple.

John Simpson was a gardener at Corbie Hall, where he and his wife lived. Queen Victoria made a number of visits to see Mr and Mrs Simpson. Following one visit, the Queen wrote in her journal, 'Old Mrs Simpson hoped she might live 'another year' to see us again' (RA VIC/MAIN/QVJ (W) 25th October 1865).
