Photograph of Queen Victoria (1819-61) seated side-saddle on Flora, with John Brown (1827-83) standing by the horse's head, at Osborne.
Whilst residing at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, the Queen records in her journal for Monday 8th May 1865, that she was 'to be photographed on my pony for that sad picture. I was done 3 times & very successfully.' The 'sad' picture referred to by the Queen was a painting that Sir Edwin Landseer (1802-73) was commissioned to paint of the Queen 'seated on my pony, led by Brown, with a representation of Osborne.'
