Photographs 1842-61

Albums compiled by Prince Albert, reflecting his beliefs surrounding photography

ANDRÉ ADOLFE EUGÈNE DISDÉRI (1819-89)

'Les Billes'; Marbles

1853

Salted paper print | 11.3 x 17 cm (whole object) | RCIN 2932747

Photograph showing a game of marbles amongst eight school boys. The game is watched by two men and a monk. Some boys stand while others crouch or sit, playing with the marbles. There is a French window behind the men, to left, and a doorway on the right.

This photograph, showing a game of marbles (les billes), probably belongs to the series showing childhood amusements which Disderi took at the Institution de l'Assomption at Nîmes in 1853. Works by Disderi were shown at the Paris Exposition of 1855, which Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited in August of that year.
