CHARLES CLIFFORD (1819-62)

View of Manresa

1860

Albumen print | 31.5 x 43.0 cm (image) | RCIN 2700174

Photograph of a view of Manresa in Catalonia. In the left foreground stands the Vell bridge over the Cardoner river. In the background on the right, is La Seu de Manresa, a cathedral with its single tower. More buildings follow the contours of the hill down towards the banks of the river. In the background are distant hills.

The Pont Vell or 'Old Bridge' was constructed during the 12th century and is distinctively pointed at its apex in the centre. The bridge suffered damage to its central section during the Spanish Civil War but was re-built during the early 1960's. The gothic church of La Seu de Manresa began construction in 1325 and the design for which was overseen by Antoni Gaudi.
