Santa Maria del Mar, Barcelona
1860Albumen print | 43.5 x 31.5 cm (image) | RCIN 2700165
Photograph of the west door of the church of Santa Maria del Mar. The door is open. Above the door are the archivolts receding to the tympanum which holds a relief of the Saviour flanked by Our Lady and St John. On either side of the main door are statues of St Peter and St Paul. On either side of the arch are two pointed arched windows with Gothic tracery designs.
The Santa Maria del Mar was constructed during the early 14th century and provides a fine example of Catalan Gothic architecture. In 1428, an earthquake caused significance damage to the building, destroying the West Rose window which was replaced in 1459.
