1857-58

Albumen print | 42.0 x 31.0 cm (image) (image) | RCIN 2700061

Photograph of the ruins of the Monastery of Yuste in the Estremadura region of Spain. In the background a man stands on an pillared gallery above which is a wooden gallery. In the foreground are three nuns sitting in the garden next to a small pool and in front of a wooden trellis. To the left of where the nuns are seated stands a man dressed in black and wearing a tricorn hat.

The monastery was built in the early 15th century. The Monastery was extensively altered to accommodate Charles V of Spain (1500-58), who remained at the monastery following his abdication in 1556.
