CHARLES CLIFFORD (1819-62)

Photographic Souvenir of Spain vol.I: The Colegio de San Gregorio, Valladolid

c.1858

Albumen print | 42.5 x 28.0 cm (image) | RCIN 2700049

Photograph of the facade of the Colegio de San Gregorio in Valladolid, Spain. The photograph shows the main entrance to the College with its examples of fine Heraldic and Gothic ornamentation. Above the doorway, the portal runs into an armorial tree featuring a shield flanked by two lions.

At ground level, on the left, four figures are seated beside a standing fifth figure. Their features may have deliberately been obscured by the photographer so as not to detract the viewer's attention from the details of the facade.
