'Vision of St François d'Assise. Enamel, 13th century'; Reliquary of Saint Francis of Assisi
c. 1855Albumen print? | RCIN 2864502
Photograph of a Limousin enamelled reliquary of Saint Francis of Assisi, created around 1230 and now in the collection of the Musée de Cluny, Paris (LO AD 81 - case 12). The four-lobed cross depicts the stigmatization of St. Francis (c.1181-1226), making it one of the saint's earliest representations. St Francis is shown amidst trees and plants, looking up at a seraph. His hands and feet bear the stigmata of the crucifixion.
