AFTER HIPPOLYTE PAUL DELAROCHE (1797-1856)
'Ste Amélie'
1857-58Albumen print? | RCIN 2160760
Photograph of a lithograph after a drawing by Paul Delaroche, created around 1831 and now in the collection of the British Museum (Inv. no. 1939,0627.6). It has been suggested that this is a preparatory work for a stained-glass window commissioned by Queen Marie-Amélie (1782-1866) for the private chapel of the Orléans family in the Château d'Eu, Normandy. The work depicts Saint Amélie, Queen of Hungary kneeling on a cushion and facing a table upon which stands a reliquary. Crowned and dressed in sumptuous robes, the Saint offers a garland of flowers to the shrine. Thee female attendants can be seen in the background, their hands clasped in prayer.
