He faces to the viewer and turns his head to the right an gazes ahead. He wears a unbuttoned coat over a shirt with lace-trimmed cuffs and collar.

At the time of the photograph, the painting was attributed to Johan Joseph Zoffany (1733-1810) and was in the collection of Mrs. George Forbes, Moniack Castle, Inverness-shire.
