'Saint Augustin et sainte Monique'
1860Albumen print? | RCIN 2865044
Photograph of a work by Ary Scheffer, a 1854 version of which is now in the collection of the National Gallery, London (Inv. no. NG1170). Inspired by St Augustin's Confessions (Book 9), the work depicts the saint seated and facing to the right. His right hand rests on his neck. Beside him sits his mother, St Monica, who holds her son's left hand in hers and places it on her lap.
Ary Scheffer (and his studio) continued throughout his life to produce new works of old compositions on demand. His paintings were also widely reproduced as etchings.
