Photograph of a three-quarter-length portrait of James Graham (1612-50), 1st Marquis of Montrose. The sitter stands facing to the right and turning his head slightly to look at the viewer. He is depicted with long hair, a moustache and a beard grown just below the lower lip. He wears a suit of armour with a high collar. He holds a baton in his right hand, while his left hand rests on his helmet laid on a table beside him.
At the time of the photograph, the painting was attributed to in the collection of Lord Panmure, Brechin Castle, Forfarshire. Subsequently, it was highly likely acquired by the National Galleries of Scotland.
