AFTER HIPPOLYTE PAUL DELAROCHE (1797-1856)

'Marie Antoinette'

1857-58

Albumen print? | RCIN 2160803

Photograph of a painting by Paul Delaroche, created in 1851. Inspired by Marie Antoinette's (1755-93) sentencing in 1793, the work depicts the French queen full-length in a courtroom. She stands facing slightly to the right, looking resigned with her hands hanging on her side. She wears a light shawl over a plain dark dress. Three armed guards are escorting her, while an audience is watching behind the bar at the far right.
