'Les Girondins'
1857-58Albumen print? | RCIN 2160824
Photograph of a painting by Paul Delaroche, completed in 1856 and now in the collection of the Musée Carnavalet, Histoire de Paris (Inv. no. P2111). Inspired from the moment the Girondins learn of their death sentence in 1793, the work depicts the group's delegates in a cell at the Conciegerie. The imprisoned men are placed around a long table, bidding farewell to one another as a guard on the right reads out a list of names. Some are seated in despair, others stand up raising one hand. A bust of Jean Paul Marat (1743-93) can be seen on a wall-mounted console in the background.
