'Les femmes Souliotes'
1860Albumen print? | RCIN 2865016
Photograph of a drawing by Ary Scheffer, drafted around 1826 as preparatory for his painting Les femmes Souliotes. Completed in 1827, the painting is now in the collection of the Louvre, Paris (Ivn. no. 7857). It depicts various women from Souli gathered on the Zalongo clifftop before their act of resistance during the 1803 Souliote War against the Ottoman Empire.
Scheffer (and his studio) continued throughout his life to produce new works of old compositions on demand. His paintings were also widely reproduced as etchings.
