'Défense de Missolonghi'
1860Albumen print? | RCIN 2865015
Photograph of a work Ary Scheffer, the prime version of which was created around 1827. The subject-matter relates to the third Ottoman siege of Missolonghi in 1825, an episode of the Greek War of Independence. A group of Greek men, women and children are visible either standing or sitting in an outdoor space. Some are depicted as heroic figures and others as crushes victims.
Scheffer (and his studio) continued throughout his life to produce new works of old compositions on demand. His paintings were also widely reproduced as etchings.
