'Le retour du Golgotha'

Photograph of an unfinished painting by Paul Delaroche, started in 1856 and now in the collection of the Musée départemental de l'Oise (Inv. no. 95.22). The work depicts the Virgin on her way back from Golgotha, following the crucifixion fo the Christ. She stands on an alleyway supported by St John on the right and St Mary Magdalene on the left. All three figures face to the right, towards a door held open by a man. St Peter approaches from the left holding Christ's crown of throns.

This work is one of the four scenes from the Life of the Virgin Delaroche started painting prior to his death. These include 'La Vierge chez les Saintes Femmes', 'L'Evanouissement de la Vierge', 'La Vierge contemplant la Couronne d'épines' and 'Le retour du Golgotha". It is believed that 'La Vierge contemplant la Couronne d'épines' was the work closer to completion.
