'Le Christ Consolateur'
1860Albumen print? | RCIN 2865029
Photograph of a work by Ary Scheffer, the prime version of which was created in 1837 and is now in the collection of the Amsterdam Museum (Inv. no. SA 2059). Inspired by Gospel of St Luke (4:18–19), the image depicts Christ the Comforter seated with his hands extended in blessing. Mary Magdalene is kneeling besides him, holding his left hand in her arms. The pair is surrounded by various oppressed figures, ranging from a freedom fighter to a handcuffed Black man. The laurel-crowned poet Torquato Tasso, who was imprisoned as a madman, can be seen among the group on the left.
Scheffer (and his studio) continued throughout his life to produce new works of old compositions on demand. His paintings were also widely reproduced as etchings.
