'Francesca de Rimini'

Photograph of a work by Ary Scheffer, the prime version of which was created in 1835. Full-versions of the painting can be found in the Louvre in Paris (R.F. 1217), the Wallace Collection in London (P316) and the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh. Inspired by a scene from Dante's Inferno, the work depicts the murdered lovers Francesca da Rimini and Paolo Malatesta. Entwined in each other's arms, the couple is swept through the air, partly covered by drapery. Dante and Virgil are standing in the background to the right viewing the dramatic scene.
 
Scheffer (and his studio) continued throughout his life to produce new works of old compositions on demand. His paintings were also widely reproduced as etchings.
